Axon Punk CyberJamz – Day 3

Day 3 of Axon Punk CyberJamz

Scarface ft 2Pac – Smile (1997)

Well, it’s Sunday morning, so let’s go to church in 2085 CyberAtlanta on Day 3 of #30daysofAxonPunk with Scarface and 2Pac.
Recorded before and released shortly after the death of #Tupac, this song and video demonstrate a lot of the ideas about faith and religion that we incorporated into Axon Punk. Religion is often discarded in #scifi, but we think it is fascinating to think about how religious practices could evolve in the near future, especially with the increased involvement of technology and the internet in faith.

Throughout the history of rap and hip hop, religion has played a HUGE role. Professing, discussing, and critiquing faith/religion are reoccurring themes you can find in almost every rapper’s library. It’s been true since the genesis of hip hop and we made sure that these elements are still very present in the megacities of 2085. Specifically, we demonstrate this in Axon Punk with “The United Church of Tupac.”

The United Church of Tupac is religion that started in the Net after the first CyberWar in the 2040s. It builds off the strong religious concepts in Tupac’s music and the abundant conspiracy theories online about his death and potential return. It also incorporates the idea that church hymns typically utilize music from 2-3 generations ago. So, for 2085, that means churches will be incorporating music from 90s and early millennium.

Scarface and 2pac’s song “Smile” and the corresponding music video is a great example of something that could lay the foundation for the Church of Tupac and easily be turned into a hymn. The lyrics focus on getting through tough times and taking care of each other but uses concepts that resonate with life in the inner cities. The surreal imagery in the video is incredible, especially considering it was filmed in 1996 not long before Tupac’s murder. Tupac crucified on powerlines? Scarface walking on water? And all of it combined with the real-life saga of these people’s lives (for real, Scarface almost died of Covid this year) adds up to easily be prophets of our cyberpunk future, if you ask me.

We get more into the details of the Church, but I like to make sure there is a local branch of it in all the megacities in Axon Punk. Axon Punk has a huge focus on community creation and growth, and you can find how to add one of the Churches into your Axon Punk game in our gamebook, which is live on Kickstart right now! Check it out here:

Also, big shout out to Matt Coglianese (aka The Pigshark) who made us the original art for The Church of Tupac. It cuts right to the idea and I still love showing it off every time I run Axon Punk.
