Day 4 of Axon Punk CyberJamz
Tyler, The Creator – Who Dat Boy (2017)
Tyler, the Creator is a really interesting artist who has evolved a ton since he hit the scene in the early 2010’s. His style has always pushed boundaries, but has gotten more artistic and avant-garde in recent years. I really enjoy how he plays with color, queerness, and interrogating masculinity in much of his work. Tyler’s often bizarre use of multimedia, loud opposition to convention/authority/censorship, and his focus on collaborative work with Odd Future all make him great inspiration for Axon Punk.
Viewed through the lens of Axon Punk, we can imagine this particular video as if two Civilians had infiltrated a Corporate Sector. While working on whatever subversive plans they had, an interruption causes Tyler to slip and accidentally blow off half of his face. Seeking help, Tyler staggers and dodges his way up the street to where one of his teammates his hiding out. A little basement surgery later from A$AP Rocky, and Tyler is cleaned up enough to pass the facial-recognition scans required to get out of the Corporate Sector. Once in the Civilian Zone, he’ll be able to get to real safety. That is, of course, if he can outrun the corporate police chasing him.
